Hotel Serenidad has a history of well over fifty years. Mulegé was made accessible to private aircraft before there was a paved road. It was made famous due to celebrities like John Wayne who would fly in for a visit. Mulegé has been a destination for private air travel since the mid-1950s. Later, Hotel Serenidad became an ideal place to entertain those who visited this quiet fishing village on the Gulf of California. It started with humble beginnings and as the need arose, a swimming pool with outdoor bar and lovely rustic accomodations were added.
Hotel Serenidad is situated on the banks of the Mulegé River and near the shores of the Gulf of California. It is several miles out of the central part of Mulegé, which allows guests the luxury of the peace found in this desert region. The 58 rooms face into courtyards and open gardens for an easy stroll. The rooms have Mexican décor and fireplaces. For the hot summer months, each room has air conditioning.
The large, well appointed dining room takes one back to the earlier romantic days of Hollywood. Don Johnson, the hotel's owner, started the now famous pig roast tradition at Serenidad more than 45 years ago. Every Saturday night, the hotel hosts this sumptuous experience. The pork, locally raised, is cooked to perfection on the outdoor rotisserie. Baja pilots still fly in just for the feast. The pig roast is held during Mulegé's tourist season starting in November. Mariachi music completes the special ambiance.
For those that like different levels of exercise, a long walk along the river can take you into town. But you can follow it all the way to the historic Misión Church. The fresh river palm canyon wanders for miles into the mountains which is its source. During hurricane season it can be a raging torrent of water, 30 feet deep that flows out to the gulf. For a gentler stroll or perfect walk with the pooch, follow it out to the Bay of Conception a few minutes away. You can see the local fishermen come and go as they have for generations. Hotel Serenidad is a good choice for rustic luxury in Historic Mulegé.
Directions: From Highway 1, pass the main entrance to Mulegé. Cross the bridge spanning the Mulegé River, approximately 2 ½ miles. Watch for the sign on left. Follow the dirt road along the airstrip.
